Local food

Tuesday 23rd Feb 2016

Breakfast – slumming it with the ordinary people in the main breakfast area in the hope of finding bacon. No luck.

Missions for today:
1.    Find the Citibank ATM and get some more cash.
2.    Try and find Kamdar to do some fabric shopping.

By the time we figure out which bus to take, it’d be quicker to walk, so we set off slowly in the heat. It’s not as far as we thought, or should I say, it’s not as far as the address indicated on the Citibank website! Mission 1 accomplised but mission 2 is where things go arse up. Fabric shopping (except in Bangkok) in the past has ended up being a wild goose chase and today was no different. I don’t know where the hell we ended up but it wasn’t where we were supposed to be. On the upside, we found a camera shop and got a new filter for the lens. The guy did his best to clean the actual lens but there might still be some tiny bits of glass in there. We’ll have to get the lens some proper medical attention when we get home.

Regrouped and back on a bus, thankfully they all go via Komtar and once we get there we’re on much firmer ground, bearing wise. Except we decide to go inside and find some lunch and end up in what must be the old section because it’s very old and very daggy and we find the dodgiest looking place to eat, but it’s busy with locals so it can’t be all bad. Char Kway Teow, a national favourite stir fried noodle dish in Malaysia, it has prawns, chicken and scallops.  5 MYR each and home made barley water, 10.60 MYR total so the barley water must have been 0.30 each!

The fabric shop I’m hunting is called Kamdar and is just around the corner from Komtar. It’s supposed to be really good and while they do have a lot of fabric, lovely feeling cottons, rayons, silks, satins, crepes and more, there’s just not anything that catches my attention, and remember, if I don’t love it, I’m not buying!

It’s now well past beer o’clock and we stumble across a place where we can get one, so what’s a person to do? While we sit and enjoy the coolness of the fan blowing on us, we notice many buses go by in a different direction to what I had planned to go. A quick look of the map and the bus routes, we can take a 101 or the CAT bus, either will get us pretty close to ‘home’. We even have time for a swim, but there’s nobody about to bring us drinks………….

Dinner – Roti Canai finally!!! 1.50 MYR each and a huge serve, lime juice must have been the big size, 3.10 MYR each. All up 9.20 MYR.
